$35 for a lecture seems high, when there are plenty of free lectures by IM/GM on the internet.

But if you have extra money, why not?

It is true that you can get much cheaper rates and even free instruction online. I honestly do not feel the online lectures compare to a live lecture where you can ask questions. Also the instructor cannot see you and thus cannot tell if he is going to fast or needs to reinforce something or ask questions to the students.

When I was below 1600 I would both watch online lectures and lectures in person. I found that while the free lectures were great (they are free, how can it be bad), but with so many people watching, questions either were not properly answered or you could not ask since there were so many people. ( I have a cut off number for the camp so it remains personal)

It is great to watch a titled player lecture online and I would say watch as much as possible it will make you better. My arguement for the lecture is the following: 1) Serious players attend to get more personal training, in Wisconsin it is rare for an IM with teaching experience to do something like this 2) Unless you have time to watch videos all day a live lecture is more efficient. It is like 1000 studying with a 1700 as opposed to a 2300, I am sure both can get the 1000 to say 1500, but it will require a lot more lessons from the 1700 than the 2300. If you have time to watch all the videos and read all the books out there, go for it. Otherwise you need to train smart (efficiently) to get the most from each hour you spend working on chess.

One is not "better" than the other. They will both make you improve. So as anonymous said: "If you have the extra money, why not?"
